Hair loss in men, also called male pattern baldness or androgenic alopecia, is the gradual thinning or shedding of hair that occurs when the natural hair growth cycle slows down. It often shows up as a receding hairline and thinning at the crown, combined with reduced overall hair density.

Hair loss can result from multiple factors. The primary cause of hereditary hair thinning/andorgenic alopecia comes from sustained exposure to male sex hormones, which causes the hair follicle to shrink overtime. Additional factors that may influence hair loss include:

• Other hormonal fluctuations
• Stress
• Aging
• Poor nutrition
• Skin conditions affecting the scalp (such as dermatitis and psoriasis)
• Other medical conditions and/or the medications used to treat them

There are several approaches to managing hair loss. Many prescription therapies help by supporting the hair growth cycle and encouraging follicles to become more active over time. The most widely used and clinically studied include:

• Topicals
• Prescription treatments
• Low-level laser therapy
• Hair transplant procedures

Most people begin noticing changes in 3 to 6 months, with fuller results appearing around 6 to 12 months. Hair grows slowly, so early improvements often start with less shedding, followed by thicker strands and improved density.

Most people experience mild shedding in the first few weeks (a normal sign that new growth cycles are starting). Side effects are usually mild, but your provider will guide you on what to watch for.

If the treatment addresses an ongoing cause, such as a genetic predisposition to hormonal hair loss, stopping it will lead to hair loss returning over time. Most treatments require long-term use to maintain results.
