How it works

How getting assessed for Ozempic works

Three steps, all online. A provider makes every prescribing decision.

  1. Man on his phone completing an online health assessmentAbout 3 minutes

    Complete the online assessment

You answer questions about your health history, current medications and goals. It takes most people about three minutes and nothing is shared outside your care team.

  2. Dr. Mark Broussenko, Medical Director at PhoenixA provider decides

    A provider reviews and decides

A licensed Canadian provider reads your assessment, may message you for more detail, and decides whether a prescription is appropriate and which option suits you. Completing the assessment does not guarantee a prescription.

  3. Man opening a plain-packaged delivery at homePlain, discreet packaging

    Delivery and follow-up

If prescribed, a partner pharmacy ships your medication in plain packaging, usually within two to three business days. Message your provider through your Phoenix account at any time.

01

What Ozempic is

Ozempic is the brand name for semaglutide, a once-weekly injectable medication made by Novo Nordisk and authorized for sale in Canada since 2018. It is prescription-only. Generic semaglutide products from Apotex and Dr. Reddy's were authorized by Health Canada in 2026 and are also available through Phoenix.

02

Strengths, dosing schedule and storage

Ozempic comes as a prefilled pen in 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg and 2 mg strengths. It is taken once a week, on the same day each week, and treatment usually starts at the lowest strength. Unopened pens are kept in the refrigerator at 2°C to 8°C. After first use a pen can be kept at room temperature or in the refrigerator for up to 56 days. Do not freeze it. Your provider's and the pharmacy's instructions take precedence over anything on this page.

03

Side effects and safety information

The most commonly reported side effects in the Canadian product monograph are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation and abdominal pain, most often when starting or increasing a dose. Ozempic is not appropriate for everyone; the monograph lists conditions and medical histories that rule it out, which is one reason the assessment asks about them.

Severe or persistent abdominal pain, signs of an allergic reaction, or changes in vision need prompt medical attention. Do not stop, change or combine prescription medications without speaking with a provider. Read the week-by-week side-effects guide for what to expect.

04

Ozempic, generic semaglutide and other options

Ozempic and generic semaglutide contain the same active ingredient from different manufacturers; the pen, packaging and price differ. Phoenix also assesses for Wegovy, Rybelsus, Mounjaro and Zepbound. Your provider recommends an option based on your history, not on which product you asked about.

For how the products differ, read generic semaglutide vs Ozempic and tirzepatide vs semaglutide, or see all weight loss treatment options.

05

What to tell your provider

Share your full health history, every prescription, non-prescription medication and supplement you take, and any allergies. Tell your provider if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding, and mention any personal or family history of thyroid cancer, or any past pancreas, gallbladder, kidney or eye problems.

The more complete your answers, the better your provider can decide whether Ozempic or another option is appropriate. You can update your information at any time by messaging your provider.

Check my eligibility

Can you get Ozempic online in Canada?

Yes, through a licensed Canadian provider. At Phoenix you complete an online assessment, a provider reviews it and decides whether a prescription is appropriate, and if it is, a partner pharmacy delivers it. No site can sell you Ozempic without that step.

Do I need a prescription?

Yes. Ozempic is a prescription-only medication across Canada. The prescription is written by a provider licensed in your province after reviewing your health information.

Who can prescribe it in Canada?

Physicians and nurse practitioners licensed to prescribe in your province or territory. Phoenix's providers are licensed in each province it serves and review every assessment individually.

What does the provider look at before deciding?

Your health history, current medications, allergies, relevant measurements and anything in the product monograph that would rule Ozempic out. If you already take a prescription medication, say so; the provider decides whether a change is appropriate. Not everyone who completes an assessment is prescribed treatment.

Can I buy Ozempic online without a prescription?

No. Any site offering it without an assessment and prescription is operating outside Canadian law and may be selling counterfeit product. See fake weight loss injections in Canada for what to check.

Which provinces does Phoenix serve?

Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador.

Is Ozempic covered by insurance in Canada?

It depends on your plan and the reason it is prescribed. Public drug plans cover it in limited cases; private plans vary. Phoenix does not bill insurers directly but gives you the receipts and documentation a reimbursement claim needs. Check with your insurer before you start.

What happens after a prescription is approved?

Your order goes to a partner pharmacy and ships in plain packaging, typically within two to three business days depending on your location and stock. You may be contacted if the pharmacy needs more information. After that, you message your provider through your account, and follow-ups happen on the schedule in your care plan.
